I just sort of came up with the idea that human-wise, Diego smoked a lot more then he did today before he joined Manny and Sid. Kind of a sign of depression really.

This is a beautiful work indeed. I really like this idea of yours of Diego smoking a lot before he met the both. Kinda shows how lonely he actually needed to be in his old "herd"... (Don't know the other English word for that, sorry...;;; )
